Abstract: On the test bench today is Glacialtech's Igloo H46 heatsink - a tower style exposed heatpipe base CPU cooler that marks one of the best efforts for this Taiwanese thermal solutions manufacturer to date. The heatsink cools very well on both Intel and AMD platforms, as you'll shortly see.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm PWM fan spins at 1600-800RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin motherboard fan header. Four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes rise up through bare aluminum fins spaced 80mm apart. Every other heatpipe is offset to the left 11mm to stagger the heatpipes as they intersect the fin stack. Each aluminum fin measures 0.2mm thin and is spaced 1.7mm apart. Typically, aluminum fins are 0.3-0.4mm thick.

Glacialtech's Igloo H46 heatsink stands 158mm tall, the bottom-most fin being 34mm above the CPU socket for clearance. The fin tower measures 50mm deep, 112mm tall and 130mm wide. The four heatpipes are swaged into a rather narrow extruded aluminum base plate with a flattened oval profile.

The exposed heatpipe base of the Igloo 46 heatsink measures 40x40mm in size. The four 6mm diameter heatpipes are swaged into an aluminum support plate measuring 40x26.5mm. Additional wire fan clips are supplied so a second 120mm rear mounted fan can be installed, the four small holes in the fins (top view) are where these wire fan clips lock into position.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The exposed heatpipe base of the Glacialtech Igloo H46 heatsink is well machined, it is completely flat in both axis. The surface has a very soft ridged texture from the tool bit. Most importantly, the heatpipes and aluminum support plate are completely flush to one another. Surface roughness is at or better than approximately 16 microinches, which is considered good.

Sound level measurements are coming right up next.
