Abstract: The Falcon IV is equipped with an open-frame 92mm fan that's internally illuminated with a couple green LEDs. The heatsink is constructed around four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes that conduct heat from a copper base plate up through to the array of generously sized stacked aluminum fins.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 92mm PWM fan on the Cooljag Falcon IV (JYC 8A03A) spins at 2500-900RPM and draws power from a 4-pin fan header. The 6mm diameter heatpipes are placed within ~6mm of the edge of the aluminum fins for some reason. Just above the copper base block is a 15mm tall skived aluminum base cap heatsink.

The Cooljag Falcon IV (JYC 8A03A) stands 119mm tall, 105mm wide and 140mm deep. The fin stack is 104mm along its length, with individual fins ranging from 46mm to 17mm deep on average. The 92mm fan is set within the cooling fins and the four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes are arranged evenly across the 105mm wide aluminum fins. Each aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced on average 1.5mm apart.

The copper base of the Cooljag Falcon IV (JYC 8A03A) heatsink measures 43x48mm in size. It ranges in thickness from 2-5mm. Note the four screws for attaching the side metal mounting brackets and the small skived aluminum heatsink.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The copper base plate of the Cooljag Falcon IV (JYC 8A03A) heatsink has smooth, lapped finish with a surface roughness of ~8 microinches. According to the straight edge the base is generally very flat, but slightly wavy in one axis.
