Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

The heat output
from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that
represent the upper limits of existing CPU families; 150W and 85W.
With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel
LGA775/1156 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the
Sunbeamtech Twister 120 heatsink yields a very good temperature result of 16.7°C
over ambient with two fans operating at 2000RPM.
Noise output is 51.2 dBA.
After
decreasing fan speed from 2000RPM to 1000RPM CPU die temperature rose to 20.3°C
over ambient (35.2 dBA).
The Sunbeamtech Twister 120 heatsink was then tested on the
Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test platform with an 85W heat load; akin to
a Intel Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor. The integrated heatspreader of a Core
i5 processor is the same size as the CPU test die used for the LGA775 synthetic
thermal test platform, so the 85W result is indicative of LGA1156 heatsink
performance qualities.
Under
these test conditions the Sunbeamtech Twister 120 heatsink had no problem
maintaining a CPU die temperature of 10.7°C over ambient with both 120mm fans
operating at full speed and 12.1°C with its fans operating at reduced speed.
Sunbeamtech supply the Twister 120 heatsink with two
non-PWM 120mm fans that are meant to be mounted in a push-pull configuration.
Running the two fans at full speed makes this heatsink is a little noisy, in
spite of the good performance you may want to dial fan speed back a bit. While
generally a very good tower heatsink competition is getting pretty stiff
and using two 120mm fans that are relatively loud is no substitution for
efficient thermal design. While the Sunbeamtech Twister 120 heatsink does
perform well, at least half a dozen other heatsinks perform better than it at
noticeably quieter noise levels.
