the heat output from intel processors varies, so frostytech tests heatsinks with two thermal loads that represent the upper limits of existing cpu families, 150w and 85w.

with a 150w heat load applied by the intel lga775/1156 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Thermalright Silver Arrow heatsink maintained a very good result of 16.0°C over ambient with the two 140mm fans operating at 1300RPM. Fan speed was then reduced to 500RPM and the test re-run. In this scenario noise levels decreased from a generally quiet 43.4 dBA to a whisper quiet 29.7 dBA while CPU die temperature increased to 25.0°C over ambient.

Thermalright's Silver Arrow heatsink was then tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test platform with an 85W heat load; akin to an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor. As the integrated heatspreader on a Core i5 CPU is the same size as the CPU test die used for the LGA775 synthetic thermal test platform, the 85W results can be considered indicative of typical LGA1156 processor thermal loads.

In the 85W heat load test the Thermalright Silver Arrow heatsink had no difficulty maintaining a very low temperature result of 9.7°C over ambient with both of its fans operating at full speed and 14.5°C over ambient with both fans slowed to a very quiet 500RPM.

Looking at the heatsink reference charts it's clear that while the Thermalright Silver Arrow heatsink does perform very well at full fan speed, other similarly sized heatsinks like the Noctua NH-D14 offer slightly better thermal results, though for a 4dbA increase in noise. What you decide is best for your computer system largely depends on whether you give priority to temperature or noise in drawing your comparisons. To some degree we're left wondering if the Silver Arrow would perform different were it manufactured with a totally flat base plate... Regardless, the Thermalright Silver Arrow heatsink retails for $74USD from CrazyPC.com, for an extra $15 CrazyPC will lap the base flat.

Bottom line, Thermalright's Silver Arrow heatsink offers very good-to-excellent thermal performance for a modest noise output, and good-to-average thermal results when operating at its quietest fan mode (fan speed 500RPM). Recommended.
