Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

The heat output
from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech tests heatsinks with two thermal
loads that represent the upper limits of existing CPU families.
With a
150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775/1156 version of FrostyTech's
synthetic thermal test platform, the Zalman CNPS9900 Max heatsink maintains an
excellent result of just 15.0°C over ambient with its 130mm fan operating at
full speed (1700RPM, 54.5dBA noise).
After
reducing fan speed to a quiet 900RPM, the test was re-run. In this scenario
noise output decreased to 38.5dBA while CPU die temperature increased by only a
small margin, to 18.4°C over ambient. Considering the drop in noise, a rise of
only ~3.4°C is quite impressive.
Zalman's
CNPS9900 Max heatsink was then tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal
test platform with an 85W heat load; akin to an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core i5
processor. The integrated heatspreader of a Core i5 CPU is the same size as that
of a LGA775 CPU, so the 85W results can be considered indicative of LGA1156
heatsink performance. In this test the Zalman CNPS9900 Max heatsink easily
maintained a result of just 9.0°C over ambient at stock fan speed and 11°C over
ambient at reduced fan speed.
Crunching the numbers: Still Excelling at Low Noise
Cooling
As we've
seen in both the AMD and Intel thermal reference charts, Zalman's CNPS9900 Max
heatsink is a performance class CPU cooler at stock fan speeds. It lands itself
squarely within the Top 10 heatsinks tested to date, in fact. If quiet cooling
is the main consideration, you'll find that the CNPS9900 Max heatsink maintains
very good thermal performance at its reduced fan speeds too.
Let's put
that 'Quiet' mode performance into perspective.
Considering only Intel heatsinks on the 150W synthetic test
platform that operate at 39 dBA or
quieter, where does the Zalman CNPS9900 Max heatsink stand? According
to the test data, 1.4°C behind the front-running Noctua NH-D14 and NH-C14 heatsinks. By contrast, the Top 5 heatsink chart
