150W
Intel Core i5 / Core i3 / Core 2 Duo /
Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

With a 150W heat
load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test
platform, the Nexus VCT-9000 heatsink maintains a satisfactory result of 38.4°C
over ambient at full fan speed (1600RPM/42.9dBA noise).
Under the
same thermal load but with the 120mm fan slowed from 1600RPM to 500RPM, the
VCT-9000 heatsink quickly falls into unsatisfactory territory. The synthetic CPU
die temperature increases by 15°C to an unsatisfactory 53.5°C over ambient, far
outweighing the benefits of the reduced noise output (28.9 dBA).
The Nexus VCT-9000 heatsink was then stressed with an 85W
heat load. Under these test conditions it fared better, resulting in a
temperature of 24.4°C over ambient at full fan speed and 32.6°C over ambient at
reduced fan speed. Satisfactory results for sure, but in the grand scheme of
heatsinks tested with an 85W heat load, not at all impressive.
Bottom line, the Nexus VCT-9000 heatsink is handicapped by
the poor construction techniques used in its manufacture.
Its four 6mm diameter and one 8mm diameter heatpipes are not firmly held
in place at the base for an exposed heatpipe format, are significantly uneven
with respect to one another, and not properly flattened to create an appropriate
mating surface for the processor (or CPU die in our case). The end result
is that less than half of the five heatpipes in the VCT-9000 heatsink Frostytech
tested made contact with the CPU test die. While the temperature results for the
VCT-9000 with its 120mm fan running at full speed are technically satisfactory, overall the Nexus VCT-9000
fails to garner any confidence. Avoid this heatsink.
