Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

the heat
output from intel processors varies, so frostytech tests with two thermal values
that represent the upper limits of existing cpu families. with a 150w heat load applied by the
intel lga775/1156 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform first,
the Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium heatsink maintains a temperature result of 16.7°C over
ambient (45.3dBA noise) with two ZT-120F
fans operating at 1300RPM.
After
reducing both fans to the minimum recommended speed of 800RPM, CPU die
temperature increases moderately to 24.9°C over ambient. Noise levels fall to
34.5 dBA.
Frostytech then repeated the same 150W heat load test,
this time with just one ZT-120F fan
mounted to the front of the Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium heatsink (rear fan removed
entirely). Under these single-fan test conditions the Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium heatsink
maintained a CPU die temperature of 18.6°C and 34.9°C over ambient, for 1300RPM
and 800RPM fan speeds respectively.
85W
Heat Load Test - double and single ZT-120F fans
The
Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium heatsink was then tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic
thermal test platform with an 85W heat load. Under these test conditions the
heatsink had no problem maintaining a CPU die temperature of 10.1°C over ambient
with two fans operating at stock fan speed
and 14.6°C with both fans reduced to 800RPM.
With the rear ZT-120F fan removed (one fan) the Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium heatsink managed
temperatures almost as good; 11.0°C and 19.0°C over ambient for 1300RPM and
800RPM fan speeds respectively.
Conclusion
It's a bit confusing writing all those results down
isn't it? Please reference the above heatsink comparison charts for a clearer
picture of where the dual ZT-120F fan and single ZT-120F fan Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium
heatsink test scenarios stand with respect to one another.
Essentially though, if you're going to run the Zerotherm
ZT-10D Premium for 'performance cooling' you can get away with just one 120mm fan of
equal standing to the ZT-120F fans. The temperature results with two fans are of
course slightly cooler, but noise levels are also bumped up in tandem.
The flip side of the coin is that it's better to install
the Apack
Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium heatsink with two 120mm fans if you plan on operating the
fan at the quietest possible level, ie. slowest speed. The Zerotherm ZT-10D Premium sees
dramatically better results with two 120mm fans slowly spinning at 800RPM
(arranged in a push-pull configuration) than with just a single fan running at
that speed and struggling to move air through the heatsinks' 74mm wide body. The
difference is about 10°C on the 150W test, ~4.4°C on the 85W test.
