Intel Core
Extreme / Pentium D & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at
150W
Intel Core i5 / Core i3 / Core 2 Duo /
Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the
LGA775/1156 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results
listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise
over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on

The heat output from Intel
processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent
the upper limits of existing CPU families.
With a 150W
heat load applied by the Intel LGA775/1156 version of FrostyTech's synthetic
thermal test platform first, the Glacialtech Alaska heatsink maintains a very
good temperature result of just 17.4°C over ambient (48.3dBA noise) at full
fan speed. This is a little more than 3°C off the top performing Intel
heatsink.
After
reducing fan speed from 1600RPM to 700RPM, CPU die temperature increases to
27.5°C over ambient.
The Glacialtech Alaska
heatsink was next tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test
platform with an 85W heat load. Under these test conditions the heatsink had no
problem maintaining a CPU die temperature of 10.7°C at stock fan speed and
16.9°C at reduced fan speed.
Given that upcoming socket 1155 Sandy Bridge processors are rated for a max
TDP of 95W, the Glacialtech Alaska heatsink should be more than sufficient
for the job.
Ultimately
the Glacialtech Alaska tower heatsink offers very good performance with its
120mm 1600RPM fan running at stock speeds. Reducing the fan speed down to a
minimum of 700RPM has a greater impact on thermal performance than we initially
anticipated - dropping the heatsink into average territories. Thus, with the Glacialtech Alaska heatsink it's best to
keep the fan running constantly at, or near full speed for the best thermal
results. If Glacialtech could only just devise a slightly easier to use mounting bracket system it would have an all around great heatsink on its hands.
