Abstract: The Akasa Venom heatsink stands 160mm tall and weighs just over 800grams. It's built around four 8mm diameter copper heatpipes and raw aluminum cooling fins. The Venom ships with a fancy nuclear yellow fan called the 'S-Flow' that spins at 600-1900RPM, moving around 83CFM according to the manufacturer.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm PWM Akasa S-Fan spins at 600-1900RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin motherboard fan header. The fan is held in place with four rubber vibration absorbing posts. A second fan (not included) may be installed on the obverse side if desired. Each aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced ~2.0mm apart.

The Akasa Venom heatsink stands 160mm tall, the bottom-most fin is 39mm above the CPU socket for clearance. The four 8mm diameter heatpipes are positioned side to side at the base, but flare out slightly before passing through the 110mm tall tower of aluminum fins. The base incorporates a 13mm thick aluminum section to provide support for clamping and heatsink mounting brackets.

The base of the Venom heatsink measures 46x46mm in size and primarily features the four exposed copper heatpipes. The gaps between heatpipes are 2.5mm wide. From the top angle the two sets of fan mounting grooves are visible (front and back). A 7mm wide plenum is formed by the concave profile of the leading edges of the aluminum fins.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The exposed heatpipes of Akasa's Venom heatsink have a surface roughness together with the rest of the base area, of approximately 32 microinches, which is considered good. The base has received a sanded surface finish treatment and is generally very flat in both axis, but not perfectly so. The copper heatpipes are very thin here, so it would not be advisable to lap the base of this type of heatsink.
