FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test
methodology is available here. |

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
The heat output from Intel processors
varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper
limits of existing CPU families; 150W and 85W. With a 150W heat load applied by
the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the
Spire Thermax Eclipse II heatsink yields an excellent temperature result of just
12.6°C over ambient with two fans operating at
2200RPM. Noise levels hover around 56.9dBA.
After
removing the optional secondary rear fan, CPU die temperatures rose to 14.5°C
over ambient. This is still good enough to put the Thermax Eclipse II ahead in
Frostytech's Top 5 Heatsink chart. Noise levels with just one fan fall to a
moderately loud 51.3 dBA.
The Spire Thermax Eclipse II
heatsink was then tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test
platform with an 85W heat load; akin to a Intel Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor.
The integrated heatspreader of a Core i5 processor is the same size as the CPU
test die used for the LGA775 synthetic thermal test platform, so the 85W
result is indicative of LGA1156 heatsink performance qualities.
Under
these test conditions the Thermax Eclipse II heatsink had no problem maintaining
a CPU die temperature of just 8.4°C over ambient with two 120mm fans installed,
and 8.7°C with just the primary 120mm fan spinning at 2200RPM.
Spire supply the Thermax Eclipse II heatsink with two
non-PWM 120mm fans that can be installed in a push-pull fashion. Given the test
results we've seen from it, it's safe to say that a single fan offers
excellent performance characteristics without any unnecessary increases
in noise.
As with
the original 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II heatsink, the
little rubber fan mounts barely hold the fans in place and quickly fall out of
place. Frostytech advises you to jerry rig an insulated wire tie to keep the
120mm fan(s) firmly attached. In spite of this annoying issue, Spire's Thermax Eclipse II is an
excellent performance heatsink for those with PC cases large enough to
accommodate its 155mm height, and moderately loud noise output. In the
default single-fan configuration it ranks within the Top 3 best
heatsinks Frostytech has tested to date.
