Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient

Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the
upper limits of existing Intel CPU families, 150W and 85W.
With a
150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic
thermal test platform, the Scythe Grand Kama Cross heatsink maintains a CPU die
temperature of 22.8°C over ambient at stock fan speed (1300RPM). Reducing the
140mm fan speed to 900RPM results in temperatures increasing to 36.1°C, while
noise levels fall from 45.9 dBA to 29.8 dBA - making it effectively dead silent.
Scythe's
Grand Kama Cross heatsink was then tested with an 85W heat load. In this
scenario the Grand Kama Cross had no difficulty maintaining a low temperature
result of 14.0°C over ambient at stock fan speed and 21.0°C at reduced fan
speed.
Great for sub-85W TDP
CPUs
From the
Intel reference chart above it's pretty evident that the Scythe
Grand Kama Cross (SCSK-2000) is a good thermal solution, but not as quiet
at full fan speed as several other better performing CPU coolers. When the 140mm
PWM fan is dropped back to 900RPM, the Grand Kama Cross heatsink is among the
quietest heatsinks Frostytech has tested thus far and offers good/average
cooling characteristics.
Bottom
line, if you're on the look out for a low noise heatsink for sub-85W TDP
processors, and your PC case will accommodate the bulky footprint of the
Grand Kama Cross heatsink, it's worth considering. Those users with +130W
TDP processors will find the Grand Kama Cross more than suitable, but not as
good as several other heatsinks in Frostytech's reference list when noise levels
are taken into consideration. It's all about selecting the best heatsink for
your requirements, case size, and budget.
