Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient

With a 150W heat
load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of
FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Zalman CNPS10X Performa
heatsink is able to maintain an excellent result of just 16.6°C over ambient at
full fan speed (2000RPM/58.7dBA noise).
Under the
same thermal load but with the 120mm fan slowed down to 1350RPM, the Zalman
CNPS10X Performa levels off at 44.8 dBA noise while temperatures rise modestly
to 19.5°C over ambient. Finally, with the fan rotating at 900RPM, test
temperatures increase to 23.6°C over ambient while noise output falls to a nice
quiet 37.3 dBA.
Zalman's
CNPS10X Performa heatsink was then tested on an 85W heat load; akin to an Intel
Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor. Faced with an 85W heat load, the heat sink had
no difficulty maintaining a CPU die temperature of 10.1°C, 11.3°C and 14.5°C
over ambient respectively for 2000RPM, 1350RPM and 900RPM fan speed
settings.
Update: In the photo's we have the 120mm fan
mounted on the incorrect side of the heatsink to that which Zalman specify.
There is about a 1 °C difference in performance if the fan is mounted as
Zalman indicate versus the opposite side of the cooling tower. All tests
were conducted with the fan in the correct position.
Bottom
line, the Zalman CNPS10X Performa heatsink is able to reach the
cooling thresholds achieved by several other CNPS10X-series coolers from Zalman, but
only if you are willing to sacrifice quiet operation. It comes out of the box
with a resistor that limits fan speed to about 1350RPM, removing that jumper
alows the 120mm PWM fan to go the full 2000RPM and the heatsink to reach
performance cooling levels. However, at that speed the CNPS10X Performa heatsink
pushes nearly 59 dBA which is too noisy for sustained operation this day and
age.
