Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W
Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test

processors vary in power output between single and multi-core models, so
frostytech tests heatsinks with two thermal loads that represent the upper limit
of each cpu family; 150w and 85w.
With a 150W heat
load applied by the Intel LGA775 version
of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Arctic Cooling Alpine 11
Pro heatsink is able to maintain a satisfactory temperature of 40°C over
ambient, with 46.1dBA noise. The Alpine 11 Pro heatsink was then tested with a
reduced fan speed of 500RPM, where it maintained an unsatisfactory temperature
of 74.4°C over ambient. Clearly, the heatsink fails to keep up on the 150W test
when fan speed is reduced to 500RPM.
After the synthetic heat load was reduced to 85W, the
Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Pro heatsink was able to maintain a CPU die temperature
of 24.7°C over ambient at stock speed and 35°C with the fan spinning at a
quieter 500RPM.
And there you have it, the Arctic
Cooling Alpine 11 Pro heatsink offers up average-to-satisfactory performance
when faced with a 150W TDP processor thermal load at full fan speed... it's best
to look towards any one of the other heatsinks in this reference chart in that
situation. The Alpine 11 Pro handles better on the 85W synthetic thermal test
platform at either fan speed setting. It's not the coolest heatsink in the
reference list, but for 85W TDP processors and the growing number of energy
efficient chips entering the market it is a viable, if quiet and uninspired
thermal solution.
