Abstract: Tuniq's Tower 120 Extreme is an enthusiast grade heatsink that cools very well, pretty quietly. In fact I'll save you the suspense and tell you straight up that it tops Frostytech's Intel reference chart and that it's one of the Top 5 best-ever heatsinks tested.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120x120x25mm at the heart of the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme heatsink spins at 2000RPM by default. The attached fan speed controller can bring that down to 1000RPM if you desire. A standard 3-pin motherboard header provides power. The seven bladed translucent fan is internally illuminated by blue LEDs. There is 47mm clearance below the bottom-most aluminum fin.

Standing a 152mm tall, the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme heatsink is a big CPU cooler. The 60 or so dark nickel plated aluminum fins are spaced 2.0mm apart, and measure 0.4mm thick. Cut in the center is a 122x30mm wide space that extends the full 100mm height of the fins. Three 8mm and two 6mm diameter heatpipes pass through the aluminum fins. Each section of aluminum fin on either side of the fan is roughly 40x130mm in area.

Tuniq's Tower 120 Extreme heatsink is 131x112mm square. The base has a machined surface and is 54x42mm in area. The entire base plate is 11mm thick at most, heatpipes are packed 1.5mm apart. The mounting bracket shown here is permanently attached. The entire heatsink is dark nickel plated, giving it a glossy surface for fingerprints to show up on.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with a straight edge in two axis.

The base of the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme heatsink has a machined finish that is very smooth, surface roughness is approximately ~16 microinches. The base is perfectly flat in both axis, and naturally copper and aluminum components are flush with one another.
