FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

The heat output from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II heatsink maintains an excellent temperature result of just 15.4°C over ambient (49.9dBA noise) at full fan speed.

After reducing fan speed from 2000RPM to 1000RPM, CPU die temperatures increase moderately to 23.0°C over ambient. Noise levels fall by ~13dbA for what is a considerably modest increase in temperatures of ~9°C.

This makes the 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II heatsink the best Intel and AMD heatsink tested in this set of reference lists.

The 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II heatsink was next tested on the Frostytech Mrk.II synthetic thermal test platform with an 85W heat load. Under these test conditions the heatsink had no problem maintaining a CPU die temperature of 9.8°C at stock fan speed and 14.1°C at 1000RPM (37.3 dBA).

3Rsystem have created a fantastic heatsink here, and as Frostytech mentioned right off the bat, the 152mm tall 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II is currently one of the best heatsinks tested to date on Frostytech. We certainly have no qualms about recommending it, though there is one issue you need to be cognisant of.

The only area where the 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II falters is the little rubber feet used to hold the fan in position. Getting the vibration isolating tabs fully seated causes the other end to come from of the aluminum fins. To get both pairs installed properly requires a little stretching... (see below).

In a PC environment this will likely cause half the fan to eventually float loosely. To fix this, mount the rubber feet at the bottom of the heatsink fully, then use thin wire to ensure the top portion of the 120mm fan is securely held. It might look bodged together, but with thermal performance numbers like we've seen today it's a minor sacrifice to make until the manufacturer revises its fan attachment approach.
