Phenom II, Athlon II/64/FX/X2, Sempron class heatsinks
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper
interface die with 125W heat load on the K8 version of the Mk.II
Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were
calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time

FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test results clearly
place the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro heatsink in an 'average' class of AMD
heatsinks. Given the simple extruded aluminum construction and 95mm fan, this is
hardly surprising. That being said, the heatsink does offer reasonable
temperatures at stock fan speed, but clearly we're pushing it beyond the design
specs considering it's rated for a 90W heat load.
With a 125W heat load applied, the Arctic Cooling Alpine
64 Pro heatsink maintains a temperature of 30.6°C over ambient at default fan
speed (2000RPM). Under these conditions it generates a moderately audible
46.4dBA noise.
When fan speed is reduced to a low of 500RPM, the Alpine
64 Pro is no longer able to function in a situation already pushing it beyond
its acceptable design envelope. At that fan speed the Alpine 64 Pro maintains an
unsatisfactory rise over ambient temperature of 79.2°C - effectively it fails.
Noise levels fall to 36.3 dBA, but that's a moot point.
Bottom line, the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro heatsink is
suitable for processors with a thermal design power of 90W or less, and average for AMD processors
pushing the 125W design envelope, so long as fan speed is maintained at 2000RPM.
At full fan speed the Alpine 64 Pro runs pretty quietly so Frostytech would
suggest limiting its use to AMD Athlon II or AMD's energy efficient 65W
processors and leave the Phenom II's to more capable CPU coolers.
