FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test
methodology is available here. |

noise level (dba) |
*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
The heat output from Intel processors
varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper
limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel
LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the
Evercool Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 heatsink maintains a fairly average temperature
result of 25.5°C over ambient (38.9dBA noise) at its default fan speed. The
default setting for the HPJ-12025 heatsink is with both 120mm fans rotating at
1000RPM in a push-pull configuration.
The
Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 heatsink was then tested with an 85W heat load. Under
these test conditions the heatsink easily maintained CPU die temperature at
15.3°C over ambient.
How does it stack up?
In
comparison to the AMD synthetic test results, the Evercool Transformer 4
heatsink doesn't handle the Intel LGA775 platform quite as well. An increased
heat load accounts for some difference naturally, but it wasn't until Frostytech
removed the heatsink from the socket 775 CPU die that the other reason
became obvious...
AMD
processors have an integrated heat spreader of ~38x38mm in size. Intel Core 2
Duo (LGA775) processors are a little more compact, measuring 30x30mm. This
difference in CPU size means that AMD chips are in full contact with all four
copper heatpipes on the Evercool Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 heatsink. The Intel processor on the other hand
only make full contact with the two center heatpipes, and one-half of the
outer two.
The
aluminum base block that supports the heatpipes and transfers clamping force
from the mounting clip is the real culprit here. Each heatpipe is separated
by a 1.75mm thick tab of aluminum, so perhaps more closely packed heatpipes at the base are the
order of the day...
In any case, Evercool's Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 is a
great heatsink for AMD platforms and a good-to-average thermal solution for
socket 775 Intel processors. It operates quietly out of the box, but I'd
certainly consider swapping out the unremarkable chromed 120mm fans for a set
of Noctua's, kept in the same push-pull configuration.
