Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test

Intel processors vary in
power output between single and multi-core models, so FrostyTech tests heatsinks
with two thermal loads that represent the upper limit of each CPU family; 150W
and 85W.
With a
150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775
version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the DeepCool Killer
Whale Premium heatsink maintains a very good result of 18.1°C over ambient
temperature at stock fan speed (52.5dBA noise). Realistically, any heatsink that
keeps temperatures to under 20.0°C is a good bet.
Fan speed
was then reduced from 1800RPM to 1000RPM, resulting in a rise in CPU die
temperature to 25.8°C over ambient (36.2dBA noise).
On the
85W heat load test, the DeepCool Killer Whale Premium heatsink maintained a
result of 11.7°C over ambient at full fan speed, and 14.8°C over ambient at
reduced fan speed. Compared to the vanilla Killer Whale with its aluminum fins, the Killer
Whale Premium runs a couple degrees cooler... and
325grams heavier.
Ultimately, DeepCool's Killer Whale Premium heatsink offers
a slight edge in cooling potential over the aluminum-built Killer Whale.
Compared to the full reference list of heatsinks, the DeepCool Killer Whale
Premium offers great performance level cooling at full fan speed, and quiet
results in the average range at lower fan speeds.
It gotes
without saying that 1.225 Kg full-copper heatsinks aren't for every situation,
and certainly with the DeepCool Killer Whale Premium you'll want to ensure
it is very firmly mounted. Remove this heatsink before shipping
the PC anywhere. Like its aluminum predecessor, the DeepCool Killer Whale
Premium is quite capable on both Intel and AMD test platforms.
