Abstract: Standing 157mm tall, the Xigmatek Thors Hammer heatsink tips the scales at 800 grams and has a rather boxy footprint of 120 x 116mm. It accomodates one or two 120mm fans that mount to the fins with special rubber vibration absorbing posts.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 157mm tall Xigmatek Thor's Hammer heatsink accomodates up to two 120mm fans, though none are supplied. Looking at the base of the cooler, you can see the four 8mm diameter heatpipes stacked below three 6mm diameter heatpipes. Above that are two 4.5mm wide aluminum tabs that join the base and three small aluminum fins together. The baseplate consists of four exposed heatpipes surrounded by a 11mm base cap.

As the 6mm and 8mm heatpipes extend through the many overlapping aluminum fins on the HDT-S126384 heatsink, they are separated by a 8mm, bringing into question the usefulness of this approach. Each nickel plated aluminum fin is 0.4mm thick, and spaced 2-4mm apart. The bottom fin is elevated 43mm for adequate motherboard component clearance.

A 7x40mm vent extends from the top fin of the Xigmatek Thor's Hammer heatsink to just above the base. At each corner there are indents where rubber vibration absorbers lock into, holding the 120mm fans in place. The odd shape of the nickel plated aluminum fins creates a 2mm to 4mm spacing at the leading and trailing edges of the heatsink to help decrease resistance to airflow. The base of the S126384 heatsink measures 42x40mm.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The base of the Xigmatek S126384 Thors Hammer heatsink is pressed flat then lightly sanded, it has a surface roughness of approximately ~16 microinches. The base is flat in both axis.
