FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test
methodology is available here. |

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
intel
processors vary in power output between single and multi-core models, so
frostytech tests heatsinks with two thermal loads that represent the upper limit
of each cpu family; 150w and 85w.
With a 150W heat load applied by the
Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's
synthetic thermal test platform, the Titan Cool Idol heatsink maintains an
average temperature of 26.9°C over ambient at stock fan speed (56.3dBA noise).
If the 120mm fan is slowed to 800RPM, the Titan Cool Idol yields a satisfactory
result of 41.5°C over ambient (37.3 dBA).
The Titan
Cool Idol heatsink was next tested with an 85W heat load. Under these test
conditions the heatsink maintained a 15.1°C rise over ambient at stock fan
speed, 21.3°C at reduced fan speed.
Given the complexity of the Titan Cool Idol's design,
the number of heatpipes utilized and the sheer mass of fins overhanging the CPU,
the results are somewhat underwhelming. At full fan speed the heatsink is
clearly capable of tackling a 150W Intel processor, though the Cool Idol handles
a little better on the AMD platform. In each instance, the Titan Cool Idol still
found itself near the middle of the pack in the reference charts.
Low noise cooling is the aim of all heatsinks being
produced right now, and quietly cooling to a low temperature is still very much
an art and science. The Titan Cool Idol heatsink will run near whisper quiet,
but the thermal results are average on the AMD platform and only satisfactory
for Intel CPUs.
The arrangement of heatpipes on the Titan Cool Idol
heatsink creates a very unstable frame which is prone to bending. The upper
portion of the heatsink lacks sufficient support fro the weight involved, and
the heatpipes directly above the CPU core are routed to the smallest cooling fin
section. With some moderate design revisions the Titan Cool Idol could solve its
fragility issues, and potentially improve thermal performance. In any event, as
it stands the Titan Cool Idol heatsink will get you there but there with its fan
running at full speed, but there are more compact, quieter and cooler heatsinks
on the market place to pick from.
