360° View - Coolermaster V8 Heatsink

The 120mm PWM fan spins its impeller at 800-1800RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header. There is also a manual fan speed controller hard wired into the fan. The Coolermaster V8 uses no less than eight 6mm diameter copper heatpipes to get the job done. The heatsink is 160mm tall, but fairly compact laterally.

There is a space 32mm wide at the center of the Coolermaster V8 heatsink for the 120mm fan. The fins form a small plenum space around the fan at the center, and as you can see the heatpipes are positioned in the path which receives the most airflow. Each nickel-plated aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and are spaced ~1.5mm apart. The bulk of the V8 is elevated 58mm above the base for good motherboard clearance.

The base of the Coolermaster V8 heatsink measures 37x37mm in size, and is machined perfectly flat. The copper base plate is 9mm thick, with depth-to-heatpipe extending from the center outward from 3-7mm. Looking at the top of the heatsink, we see a plastic fan shroud which supports the 120mm fan in between the components of the cooler.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The Coolermaster V8 heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately 16 microinches, which is considered good. The base surface has a machined finish that is perfectly flat in both axis. All eight nickel plated heatpipes are soldered to the base plate (bottom half copper, upper portion aluminum). The copper base plate is thinner at the center, and gradually thicker towards the edges.
