Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test

the heat
output from intel processors varies, so frostytech tests with two thermal values
that represent the upper limits of existing cpu families. with a 150w heat load
applied by the intel lga775 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test
platform, the Thermaltake MaxOrb heatsink maintains a good temperature of 22.9°C
over ambient. Noise output is 57.4dBA. That's a little higher than most users
will be comfortable with, especially as the MaxOrb remains fixed speed per the
manual fan speed controller.
At a
reduced fan speed of 1300RPM the temperature result sticks to 25.2°C over
ambient while noise output decreases to 45.7 dBA.
For the
next round of testing the heat load was decreased to 85W, and the Thermaltake
MaxOrb heatsink tested at full and reduced fan speeds. The results of these
tests were temperatures of 13.1°C and 14.8°C over ambient, respectively.
Priced at
$45 bucks, the Thermaltake MaxOrb heatsink will get you into the game
by maintaining nice temperatures at high heat loads when operating at full tilt,
but you'll certainly hear it. Shop around and you'll easily find cooler-running
heatsinks that operate with less noise, and offer the benefits of
automatic PWM fan control.
