Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

There are two 80mm fans on the Thermaltake DuOrb heatsink, each spins at 2000RPM. Power is supplied by a single 3-pin power connector to the two fans which light up blue and red.

The six 6mm diameter heatpipes connect several different radial fin arrays to the base of the DuOrb heatsink. The copper fins wrap around an inner ring of aluminum fins, so there is quite a lot of cooling surface area at work here. Each copper fin is 0.2mm thick, the aluminum fins are ~0.3mm thick. Fin pitch varies from 1-2mm. The bulk of the DuOrb heatsink is elevated 44mm above the base.

From the side, the Thermaltake DuOrb is pure copper fin. These overhanging portions of the heatsink make it possible to cool adjacent motherboard components and keep the total height of the cooler to 84mm.

The DuOrb's 40x45mm copper base is machined very smooth and flat. The copper base is ~2.5-6mm thick. The 6mm diameter copper heatpipes are soldered to the aluminum and copper fins for good thermal conduction.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The Thermaltake DuOrb heatsink has a machined copper base which is very smooth and quite flat in both axis. Surface roughness is at or better than ~16 microinches. The base itself measures 45x40mm in size.

Next, let's see how this heatsink handles the heat compared to a selection of the best AMD, and then Intel heatsinks!
