Abstract: Sandwiched in the middle is a 120mm PWM fan that spins at 1300RPM, making the Triton 79 Amazing fairly quiet under power. The heatsink is compatible with Intel socket 775 and AMD socket 754/939/940/AM2+ processors.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm PWM at the center of the Triton 79 Amazing heatsink spins at 1300RPM by default and is backwards compatible with 3-pin connectors. At the center of the heatsink there is a plenum on either side of the fan about 10mm wide. The impeller blades are exposed along the sides of the heatsink, so watch out for stray wires getting entangled!

Four U-shape 6mm diameter copper heatpipes make their way through ASUS Triton 79 Amazing heatsink. The nickel plated aluminum fins are 0.4mm thick and spaced ~1.8mm apart. At 148mm tall, the Triton 79 Amazing has 56mm of clearance below the lowest fin for motherboard component clearance. The cuts in the base are for the AMD mounting bracket to slide into.

The 30x30mm copper base of the ASUS Triton 79 Amazing heatsink is dark nickel plated, as is the entirety of the heatsink. The base plate is ~3mm thick, and all four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes have been soldered in place. With the fan removed from the center of the heatsink it's easier the "working surfaces" of the Triton 79 Amazing. The screw holes right next to each heatpipe seem very badly placed...

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The ASUS Triton 79 Amazing heatsink has a lightly sanded base finish with a surface roughness of ~32 microinches. The dark nickel plating over the copper base plate gives it a smooth feel, but we're not really a fan of this treatment. The base measures 30x30mm in size and is generally flat both axis.

Now let's see how this heatsink handles the heat compared to a selection of the best AMD and Intel heatsinks!
