FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal
Heatsink Test Results
Intel
Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested
at 150W Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 /
Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper
interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775
version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for
each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient
temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test
methodology is available here. |

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal
test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low
noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with
variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included
in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific
heatsink review. |
the heat
output from intel processors varies
widely between single and multi-core processors, so
frostytech relies on two thermal values that represent the upper
limits of existing intel cpu families. with a 150w heat load applied
by the intel lga775 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Scythe Zipang
heatsink maintains a temperature of 24.7°C over ambient. Noise levels
hold steady at 33.1dBA from the 138mm fan which spins at
a fixed speed of 1000RPM.
Next we dropped the
heat load down to 85Watts, akin to an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Under this
condition the Scythe
Zipang heatsink maintained a good temperature of 15.2°C over ambient.
The Scythe Zipang heatsink handled
quite well on both Intel and AMD platforms, however the real strength of this heatsink is its
very low noise operation. Only three other CPU coolers post similarly low temperature results and come close to the
Zipang's 33.1 dBA noise level. They are the Tuniq Tower (33.9dBA), Noctua NH-U12P (with its
speed reducers; 32.1/34.6dBA), and Coolink Silentator (32.5dBA) heatsinks.
With its large 138mm fan, six copper heatpipes and
multi-socket mounting hardware, the Scythe Zipang heatsink is a versatile low
noise heatsink for any PC that can accommodate its'
width.
If you're building a media center or home theatre PC and need really
quiet processor cooling, the Scythe Zipang (or one of other three
heatsinks we mentioned) is an excellent cooler to consider.
