FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

The heat output of Intel processors vary, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 Pro heatsink maintained a temperature of 40.5°C over ambient, at full fan speed (44.1 dBA noise).

As fan speed is reduced to 500RPM (39.3 dBA), the Alpine 7 Pro heatsink rose in temperature to 49.4°C above ambient - proving itself satisfactory but a little out of place on the 150W Intel test platform.

Next an 85W heat load was applied to the Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 Pro heatsink, and in this test scenario the little extruded aluminum heatsink managed better results comparatively speaking. At full fan speed the Alpine 7 Pro CPU cooler was able to hold steady at 23.8°C over ambient - good for its class and $15 price tag. With a reduced fan speed of 500RPM, the heatsink yielded a 29.9°C rise over ambient temperature.

So what's the verdict? The Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 Pro Intel socket 775 heatsink is an okay cooler for sub-85W processors, and very inexpensive. For performance oriented processors that output anywhere in the region of 125-150W, the Alpine 7 Pro is a little out gunned, but satisfactory if the PC chassis has good airflow.
