The Xigmatek HDT-S1283 heatsink is designed with effective lower noise, and indeed low noise operation in mind. The unit has a 120mm PWM fan installed on four vibration absorbing rubber posts, errant fan vibrations or motor noise are diminished. Under power at full speed (2200RPM) the HDT-S1283 is moderately audible. For the purposes of this test, the Zalman Fanmate 2 was used to decrease voltage to the 120mm PWM fan, resulting in whisper quiet operation. Sound Level Measurements: Which Heatsink is Quietest?

Listening to the actual noise a heatsink makes allows you to hear what pure numbers alone cannot get across. To further emphasize FrostyTech's reliance on cold hard facts when evaluating a heatsink, we also take noise level measurements with a sound level meter.

FrostyTech Heatsink Noise Level Measurements Noise level Decibel measurements of each heatsinks' fan in operation are taken with the aid of a sound level meter and sound isolating enclosure. The values may be higher than the mfgr's listed specs, but are directly comparable to one another. Measurements are made on the dB (A) scale, lower values are best. The 120mm PWM fan on the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 heatsink spins at 2200RPM by default, and this creates about 50.7 dBA noise. On any recent Intel/AMD motherboard, the BIOS will automatically scale down fan speed to as low as 1000RPM depending on the current thermal requirements. At a reduced fan speed, the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 produces as little as 35 dBA - essentially whisper quiet. The nice thing about this Xigmatek heatsink is that thermal performance doesn't suffer when the cooler is running quietly, as you'll see next.
