The 25x92x92mm fan on the front of
the Auras LPT-700 heatsink quickly removes to allow access to the LGA775 mounts below (spring
tensioned screws slip into each of the four aluminum cups). The fan is
PWM complaint and rotates at 700-2100RPM. Power is supplied by a 4-pin
motherboard fan header, the fan defaults to full speed when connected to
a 3-pin connector. It can be replaced with another fan of the same
dimensions if desired. |

An aluminum fan shroud on the
Auras LPT-700 adapts the 92mm fan with the 80mm wide heatsink body.
The aluminum fins are press fit over the three, 6mm diameter copper heatpipes. These
route to the base where they are packed edge-to-edge to ensure good
thermal transmission from the copper base plate. Each aluminum fin is 0.3mm thick
and spaced ~1.5mm apart. The injection molded aluminum LGA775 mounting frame doubles as
the base for the heatsink, holding all the various components together. As it's
attached to the copper base, it would be advantageous to have some
fins moulded into this aluminum component to help it shed heat as well.

The top shot of the Auras LPT-700 heatsink better
demonstrates the change in width to 80mm, with a further reduction to 65mm
just past the fan shroud. The top black tab releases the fan from the
plastic retention bracket. The three heatpipes are soldered to the 2mm thick
copper base plate. The copper plate is 42x36mm in size, with a smooth
finish. The injection moulded aluminum base and mounting frame very solidly holds the
LPT-700 heatsink together, while ensuring compression forces are evenly distributed. The only
possible downside to this approach is that the aluminum makes direct contact
with the copper base pad, so some heat is absorbed
into the bracket where it's effectively just stored. The rivets in the
base are all flush. |
