intel processors vary in power output between single and multi-core models, so frostytech tests heatsinks with two thermal loads that represent the upper limit of each cpu family, 150w and 85w. with a 150w heat load applied by the intel lga775 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Tuniq Tower 120 heatsink yields an Top 10 worthy rise above ambient temperature result of just 19.6°C, with 51.6dBA noise. Tuniq's Tower 120 heatsink was then tested with a 85W heat load, and in this test environment maintained a low 12.2°C rise over ambient temperature. Fan speed was reduced with the supplied fan speed controller, causing noise levels to decrease from a high of 51.6 dBA to 33.9 dBA. The Tower 120 ran Very quiet indeed. With this slower fan speed (about 1000RPM), the embedded 120mm fan was able to keep temperatures on the 150W synthetic test platform at a steady 24.2°C over ambient. Next came the 85W test, which resulted in a 14.4°C rise in temperature over ambient. To put that another way, a decrease in fan speed from 2000 to 1000RPM resulted in a drop in noise from 51.6 dBA to 33.9 dBA - 17.7 dBA. The consequence of which was a rise in temperature in the 150W synthetic temperature test of 4.6°C. For the 85W test scenario, a drop in fan speed caused temperatures to rise by a minor amount, just 2.2°C. Clearly, the Tuniq Tower 120 is an excellent heatsink for high heat processors and among the best low noise heatsinks out there. The Tuniq Tower 120 heatsink retails for $46USD from CrazyPC.com, so saddle up! While some of these results aren't included in the above reference chart, we can tell you that the Coolink Silentator is the only heatsink which comes in with lower temperatures and noise levels on the AMD platform. In terms of Intel heatsinks, only the 3Rsystem Iceage 120, Scythe Infinity SCINF-1000, and Scythe Mine Rev. B manage better temperatures with comparable noise levels to that to of the Tuniq Tower 120 heatsink. Check the individual reviews for the full rundown. There's no getting past the fact the Tuniq Tower 120 is a very large and somewhat bulky heatsink. It's unique thermal design works, and most importantly it works very well as a low noise heatsink. That's something we can all appreciate.... well, no. That's something anyone of us with a large enough case can appreciate. ;) At full fan speed this big cube ranks in with the top 10 best heatsinks Frostytech has tested thus far, and as a low noise heatsink it performs very well on both acoustic and thermal fronts. The mounting hardware may be cude, and installation will require pulling out a motherboard, but the thermal test data gets the last word.
