SuperMicro 750 Server Case Review

There is absolutely no doubt that this is a huge case. In fact, 99% of people will have absolutely no need for a case this large. Luckily, 98% of you overclock, and this is a dream case as far as overclocking goes.

The Supermicro SC-750 measures almost 26" tall in its glory and was originally designed to house dual Xenon server systems. Being destined for Xenon's seems to do funny things to cases... All of a sudden they get lots of vents, and fans in just about every possible corner. With all these air vents and fans, and little leprechauns (wait, scratch that) it makes a fairly adequate ;-) case for the overclocker, or peripheral junkie. Vast and cavernous, the SuperMicro 750 has no less than six bays, cooled by four 80mm fans.  Those four fans are only really going to be necessary for a SCSI setup, but high RPM IDE drives, or multiple burners can always use a little cooling themselves.

Those of you who think this case is a dime store puppy can leave now. All these cool features come with a hefty price tag. But like a fine car, you get what you pay for so lets crack it open and take a peek inside. As always, looks are nice but the insides have to match up!

General specs This case comes with all the accessories - clips, screws, standoffs, slot covers, fan boxes - that you will need for every mounting configuration. A simple 2 page exploded diagram set of instructions shows how everything should go together in the end. We opted to get our case without the powersupply. Server powersupplies of the 300W-350W flavor seem to bump the price of most $250-$300 cases into the $700-$800 range. That is just way too expensive for mer mortals.

A 350W Enermax powersupply was secured and installed into the SC-750 for about $70CDN. We've looked at this power supply before, and always talk about it in a positive fashion. It's one of the best we've seen so far, and the price is unbeatable.

Those of you thinking about sticking an MC1000 or other type of Peltier rig into this case will especially love the Enermax for the amount of current it throws at those little Thermoelectric devices. It can put out up near 33 Amps! I recently say a 'Various' brand 500W power supply on Akiba, but have been unable to find a source for it here.
