Akasa AK-876 AMD Athlon64 Heatsink Review
Akasa AK-876 AMD Athlon64 Heatsink Review

Abstract: As you might expect, the Akasa AK-876 is a lower noise AMD processor heatsink that is both easy to install and fairly lightweight. A thermally controlled fan was abandoned for a PWM compliant one instead.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.
The Heatsink Fan:
The three 6mm diameter copper heatpipes stick out from the top of the Akasa AK-876 heatsink. The aluminum fins are swaged in place over the heatpipes, not soldered. Each fin is 105x58mm in size. The 95mm fan is held in place on the plastic shroud with 80mm mounting points, and connects with a 4-pin PWM power cable. The fan is backwards compatible with 3-pin power connectors.
Heatsink Exposed:
The three copper heatpipes rise up 130mm through ~50 aluminum fins, the fins are 0.03mm thick and spaced 1.8mm apart. The copper base is soldered to each of the heatpipes for a joint with low thermal resistance. The fan and shroud clip on to the fins directly with some tabs along the side. The AMD K8 mounting clip floats in between two of the three heatpipes so it cannot be removed. The fulcrum is self-centering.

Heatsink Top:
The AK-876's fan is the most important component of the heatsink. In this case the 95mm Akasa fan is a 7-bladed unit that spins at 600-2500RPM. The fan draws power from a PWM compliant 4-pin motherboard connector. There is no wire grill to protect the fan from errant wires inside the computer case.

Heatsink Side A:
The body of the Akasa AK-876 stands 138mm tall. The heatsink installs onto the center tabs of the AMD heatsink retention cage - the only part to remain consistent between each CPU pin revision. The copper base is 5mm thick, and the base block has an overall thickness of 11.3mm.

Heatsink Side B:
There are three 6mm diameter copper heatpipes in the Akasa AK-876 heatsink which run up the side, through the stacked aluminum fins where airflow is highest. Note the fan shroud and how it attaches to the body of the heatsink. The fan is mounted slightly off center so it extends 14mm below the first aluminum fin. As is common, the bulk of the cooling fins are elevated 38mm above the base of the heatsink to provide clearance for adjacent motherboard components. The clip snaps in place without any force, and then the little cam arm is rotated to apply the correct pressure on the heatsink.

Heatsink Base:
The AK-876 heatsink has a 5mm thick copper base plate measuring 35 x 35mm in size. The base is pretty flat in both axis and comes with a thin coating of grey thermal compound applied. The copper has a sanded finish which gives it a surface roughness of ~63 microinches.
