Intel processors can vary widely in heat output between single and multi-core processor families, so we rely on two thermal load values to test Intel heatsinks here at Frostytech. Most single core CPUs output about 85W max, whereas newer quad-core chips can scale close to 135W-150W when fully loaded. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Scythe Katana II SCKTN-2000 heatsink maintains a temperature of just 32.5°C over ambient (with 37.9 dBA noise). This is fairly average as you can see by its ranking among the reference heatsinks abov. The Katana II heatsink was then tested with an 85W heat load, representing Intel single core processors like the Pentium D. Scythe's heatsink yielded a rise over ambient temperature of 18.6°C this time around, which is pretty good. Ultimately though, Scythe's Katana II SCKTN-2000 heatsink is a fairly average thermal solution for Intel and AMD processors. Judging by the thermal test results we've seen here, the Katana II is unable to really pull ahead of the competition. It'll get the job done very quietly indeed, but the Scythe Mine Rev.b and Zalman CNPS9700LED heatsinks will do the same job even cooler still.
