FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

the heat output from intel processors varies between single and multi-core solutions as you're aware. FrostyTech must rely on two thermal values to represent the upper limits of each class of CPU to test thermal solutions for all platforms. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Asus Arctic Square heatsink maintains a temperature of just 24.9°C over ambient (44.9dBA noise).

When the speed of the 92mm PWM fan speed is reduced to 1200RPM the sound output falls to 38.3 dBA, and the heatsink maintains a 32.0°C rise over ambient. Next the Asus Arctic Square heatsink was tested with an 85W heat load, common for many Pentium D and Celeron processors. In this case the Arctic Square heatsink held steady with a low 40.9°C temperature (over ambient) at full fan speed. As fan speed was reduced, the Arctic Square maintained a rise above ambient temperature of 19.3°C. For its class, these thermal results are quite good.

Ultimately the Asus Arctic Square heatsink is a good lower noise thermal solution with the capability of handling higher heat loads from modern day multi-core processors, or for adequately cooling single core chips from either AMD or Intel. Its bulky shape may prevent it from being used with some motherboards that have large heatsinks mounted to the MOSFETs or northbridge, but otherwise the Asus Arctic Square heatsink is easily recommendable.
