The Heatsink Fan:
The Akasa EVO 120 heatsink is equipped with a 120x120x25mm fan
that spins in the region of 1000-2000RPM. Anything big
and relatively slow is fairly quiet as a result. Owing to the design of
the heatsink, there is no protection from errant wires being sucked into
the fans' impeller; so it's best to organize you computer
appropriately during installation. The fan draws power from a standard 3-pin motherboard fan
header, or it can be connected to the supplied Akasa fan speed controller (fits into
a PCI bracket). The orange impeller of the translucent plastic fan is not internally illuminated. |

The Heatsink Front:
With the 120mm fan removed, it's surprising how
little of the heatsink's cooling fins are actually visible. The three
heatpipes spread the heat out over the length of the 120mm long fins,
which are pretty widely spaced. To ensure compatibility with a wider
number of computer chassis, the cooling fins are set off center to one
side. This way the Akasa EVO 120 can be installed in situations where the
CPU socket is close to videocard, the power supply, or some other tall
component. |

Heatsink
Top: Looking down from the top of
the Akasa EVO 120 heatsink we can see the mounting clips for K8 processors at either
side of the copper base. The upper portion of the heatsink is 35mm thick, and with
the fan, 60mm. The 50-odd aluminum fins are only 30mm wide. |

Heatsink Side A:
Each aluminum fin on the Akasa EVO 120 heatsink measures 0.4mm thick, and the fin pitch is
~1.5mm. The cooling fins don't quite extend the full height of the 120mm fan, and instead occupy
an area of 125x96mm. There is about 30mm clearance between the bottom of the heatsink and the surface
of the motherboard. |

Heatsink Side B: The cooling fins of the Akasa EVO
120 heatsink are set off center from the base block. This makes
installation easier since screws are accessible without removing the fan. Depending on
the orientation of the CPU socket with respect to adjacent components, the overhang
of the heatpipes and cooling fins may cause interference. Each of the copper heatpipes is
soldered to the base block. |

Heatsink Base:
The copper base that comes in contact with
the CPU measures 40x44mm in size, more than sufficient to fully cover the surface of
a socket 939 AMD Athlon64 processor. The steel mounting brackets screw into the copper with a couple of machine screws at either
side, and this allows the Akasa EVO 120 to be installed on
a variety of Intel and AMD processor formfactors. Surface roughness is on
the order of ~63 microinches, which is considered satisfactory. The copper is flat,
and has a sanded finish. |
