*heatsinks are ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

with a 125w heat load applied by the amd k8 version of the frostytech synthetic thermal test platform, the akasa ak-860sf heatsink runs a nice 28.2°c above the ambient temperature, with 59.2 dba noise. using the supplied fan speed controller we can decrease noise output considerably to a whisper quiet 37.3 dba. to do that though, the fan speed drops from 3400rpm to 1500rpm, and this has negative effect on the ability of the akasa ak-873 heatsink to cool properly. the decrease in airflow directly causes temperatures rise to 46.7°c above ambient.

overall we've seen what the Akasa AK-873 heatsink can do, and at its full speed the cooler is well positioned to offer great performance for any K8 processor. The Akasa AK-873 really isn't well suited to operating as a low noise heatsink, not because it doesn't run quietly enough (it does, 37.3 dBA is certainly silent), but because its fins are too closely spaced to accommodate such low air flow. As a result, while in quite mode the AK-873 heatsink performs quietly, but not very coolly... and there are certainly quite a few other K8 heatsinks which are better suited for low noise operation.
