Heatsink!
With the Thermalfly F1-IACSHA
heatsink utilizing a 63mm
squirrel cage fan, it tends to generates a little more noise at default speeds than
an equivalent vaneaxial fan would. It's best
to leave the fan in its thermally controlled mode so the speed will ramp up
with thermal load. For the purposes of this review FrostyTech will be testing the Thermalfly F1-IACSHA
heatsink with its fan at its set at full speed (3500RPM), and its lowest speed (1300RPM). To listen to this

Sound Level Measurements: Which Heatsink is
Quietest?
Listening to the actual noise a heatsink makes
allows you to hear what pure numbers alone cannot get across. To further
emphasize FrostyTech's reliance on cold hard facts when evaluating a heatsink,
we also take noise level measurements with a sound level meter.

Noise level Decibel

are taken with the aid of a sound level meter and sound isolating
enclosure. The values may be higher than the mfgr's listed specs,
but are directly comparable to one another. Measurements are made on

When
rotating at its full 3500 RPM, the F1-IACSHA heatsink's squirrel
cage fan produces 60.4 dB of noise. The effect on temperature
with this much airflow may be good, but it's unrealistic to accommodate
60 dB of noise from a PC anymore. With the fan speed dialed all the way down, the Thermalfly F1-IACSHA heatsink runs significantly quieter.
Surface Finish and Flatness
Surface finish is an important factor that we all
look for when holding a new heatsink. Flipping a cooler over to see how well the
base has been machined is a quick way to judge the attention to detail that was
put into making it. The following test involves the use of a Surface Roughness
Comparator, which offers a concise cross section common machine surface
finishes.
The Thermalfly F1-IACSHA heatsink has a surface
roughness of approximately 12 microinches, which is considered very good.
