Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm
copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform.
Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining
the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on
Frostytech's test methodology is available
here. |

125w thermal test (°c) |
noise level (dba) |
*heatsinks are
ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over
ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered
best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high
speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more
detailed results reside in each specific heatsink
review. |
The FrostyTech Mk.II Thermal
Test platform stresses each K8-class heatsink with 125W of heat, and in this thermal
test the Zalman CNPS7000B-CU heatsink performs well at the stock fan speeds.
A rise above ambient temperature of 32.3°C is relatively mainstream in this day
and age, but the 44.9dBA noise it generates is admirably low. When the
CNPS7000B-CU fan speed is reduced to 1350RPM the heatsink yields barely 33 dBA
noise, with a rise above ambient temperature of 44.9°C.
As a low
noise heatsink for the K8 platform the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu does excel... 33dBA puts it
among the quietest heatsinks in the reference list above. However, as a low
noise heatsink aiming for really low thermals it has been surpassed by more
recent Zalman heatsink models like the CNPS9500-AM2.
As a socket A heatsink the CNPS7000B-cu has one major limitation; the
retention system for this socket relies upon the AMD motherboard mounting holes.
Since these mounting holes in the PCB around the socket are far from common, the
CNPS7000B-Cu is not universally acceptable. In all other respects the Zalman
CNPS7000B-CU heatsink offers a broad CPU platform compatibility and relatively
good thermal results for its class... however there are certainly many other
coolers to select from which yield better temperatures still.
