Heatsink Test Results
AMD Athlon64 / FX / X2 &
Sempron class heatsinks Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper
interface die with 125W heat load on the K8 version of the Mk.II
Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were
calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time

with a 125w heat load applied by the frostytech synthetic
thermal test platform, the Apack ZeroTherm
BTF90 heatsink yields a very nice rise above ambient temperature at its stock
fan speed of just 20.5°C, with 52.1 dBA noise generated.

from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads
applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform.
Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by
determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test.

with a
150w heat load applied by the intel lga775 version of frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Apack
Zerotherm BTF90 yields a rise above ambient temperature of 21.8°C with 52.1dBA.
The CPU equivalents of this test would be an Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition
or Core 2 Quad class chip. With an 85W heat load, temperatures drop to
12.7°C over ambient.
Key to a heatsink such as this is good
airflow; the fan exhaust should always be directed towards the rear of the
computer where case fans and the power supply can aid in the removal of warm air
from within the chassis. The widely spaced copper fins offer little resistance
to airflow and consequently a slower speed fan meshes nicely with the design.
The 92mm fan employs PWM to dynamically scale fan
speed with compatible motherboards, but for the purposes of these tests the fan
was run at its full speed of 2500RPM.
With an
emphasis on copper, a very complex heatpipe
pattern, and widely spaced cooling fins the Apack ZeroTherm BTF90 is
a remarkably successful heatsink for socket AM2 or 939 AMD processors. Much
more so than was ever expected to be frank.
At first glance any heatsink that takes the form of a
butterfly, or apple, or whatever is bound to be of suspect usefulness. Yet, in
spite of these first impressions the thermal test results for the Apack
ZeroTherm BTF90 heatsink once again underscore that you can never tell how a
heatsink will perform just by looking at it.
