FrostyTech.com Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform. Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

with a 125w heat load applied by the frostytech synthetic thermal test platform, the Spire Verticool II SP601B3 heatsink posts thermal results quite close to that of stock AMD socket 939 heatsinks, but much quieter. For example, take a look at the two AVC heatsinks in this reference list, the MF064-074 and Z7U3301001. On the synthetic K8 temperature test platform the Spire Verticool II SP601B3 heatsink manages a rise above ambient temperature of 28.3°C with about 48.9 dBA noise.

From what we've witnessed, that makes the Spire Verticool II is a good mainstream socket 939/754/940 AMD Athlon64 heatsink (it's also socket 775 compatible). Its small copper base, twin heatpipes, and large array of stacked aluminum fins work together in a fashion we have seen other vendors roll out, but at least the design is thermally efficient and doesn't require an especially powerful fan. The end result is a heatsink which retails for $34USD ($38CDN) and can offer some respite from the stock AMD heatsinks which tend to get a little noisy when the thermally controlled fan spins all the way up to full RPM.

The odd way in which the 80mm fan frame partially blocks one of the K8 mounting screws is going to cause problems if the motherboard CPU socket orientation is such that re-screwing in the fan is difficult. Otherwise it's a slight inconvenience to live with. On the whole, Spire have produced a good heatsink and the Verticool II will certainly offer satisfactory thermals and reduced operating noise.
