The Heatsink Fan:
Looking at the top of the heatsink we can see the tips of
the four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes poking through. The 38 nickel plated
aluminum fins are each roughly 121 x 62mm in size, and that adds
up to a significant cooling surface area. The tabs on
either edge are for the wire fan clips to lock into.

Heatsink Top: The entire Noctua NH-U12 heatsink stands
155mm high, with each of the 38 aluminum fins measuring just 0.5mm thick.
Fin spacing is pretty wide (2.8mm)
as heatsinks go, but this allows slower RPM fans to be used as there is
less airflow resistance. The notches along the edges of the fins in this perspective
allow 120mm or 92mm fans to fit in snugly. The 7mm thick copper base is
shown without any of the processor specific mounting hardware installed. |

Heatsink Side A: The widely spaced nickel plated aluminum fins
are all soldered to the four copper heat pipes which rise up
from the base. There are no specific instructions for orienting the Noctua NH-U12 in a specific
way (other than setting the fan to blow hot air towards the rear of
the case), so we'll assume that means the heatpipes use metal wicks.

Heatsink Base: The
useable area of the copper base is 36 x 50mm, just shy of the
AMD Ahtlon64's 37.5 x 37.5mm integrated heat spreader dimensions in one
direction. The copper surface has been face milled flat, with surface
roughness in the 32 microinches area. A small tube of white silicon thermal
compound is included in the heatsink package. |
