Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm
copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform.
Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining
the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on
Frostytech's test methodology is available
here. |

*heatsinks are
ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over
ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered
best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high
speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more
detailed results reside in each specific heatsink
review. |
Considering the two sets of rise above ambient temperature
results for the Vantec Mach 1 heatsink, it actually performed better than
originally expected. The Vantec Mach 1 performs best with its fan spinning at the
full 3800RPM, and satisfactorily when RPM levels
are decreased to reduce sound output to 48.6 dBA. As a K8 heatsink, the Vantec
Mach 1 just barely cuts it, this is a cooler that seems to have
been taken from the socket 478 platform and tasked with
the duty of AMD's 64-bit processors. For a socket 754 Athlon64 solution it should be fine so long as fan speed is
maintained, but for socket 939 Athlon64 processors there are plenty of better performing
and quieter heatsinks to select from with more head room.
The main issue we see with the Vantec Mach 1 is its
exceedingly thin copper base plate. The copper pad measures just 2mm
thick and only 34x67mm in size. Since the copper it isn't even flush with
the rest of the heatsink's base, that leaves a large area of the 38x38mm
AMD Athlon64 integrated heat spreader literally floating in the
air.
