Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm
copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform.
Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining
the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on
Frostytech's test methodology is available
here. |

125w thermal test (°c) |
noise level (dba) |
*heatsinks are
ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over
ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered
best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high
speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more
detailed results reside in each specific heatsink
review. |
At its highest fan speed of 5400RPM, the AVC
Z7UB301 heatsink performs very well indeed. According to the thermal test
results from the FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Test Platform which applies a
125W heat load to the heatsink, the AVC Z7UB301 maintained a rise above
ambient temperature of 24.6°C at its best fan speed. The noise level was
nearly 60 dBA in that case however.
When running with a more conservative fan speed, noise
levels dropped to about 44 dBA and temperatures rose to a rise above ambient
temp. of 32.6°C - pretty good actually. The temperature sensitive fan utilized
on the AVC Z7UB301 heatsink certainly gives it the potential to be both a great
performing heatsink and a lower noise one as well.
Considering these results, it is clear that AMD has provided socket
754/939/940 Athlon64 users with very capable heatsink. The AVC Z7UB301 is designed to cool only
as much as necessary, which leaves us wishing there were a way to manually
control the fan speed. In any case, it is comforting to note that there
are quite a few third-party heatsinks which perform poorer than the AMD
reference AVC Z7UB301 heatsink at its quietest, and most surprisingly
with higher noise levels too.
