Abstract: The Silent Boost K8 heatsink does not come with any fan speed controllers, or temperature sensors, so it is a very basic cooling solution for standard desktop computers.

Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm
copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform.
Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining
the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on
Frostytech's test methodology is available
here. |

125W Thermal Test (°C) |
Noise Level (dBA) |
*Heatsinks are
ranked according to the 125W Thermal Test results column (rise over
ambient temp.). Low temperatures with low noise levels are considered
best. For reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high
speed (12V) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more
detailed results reside in each specific heatsink
review. |
As a
lower noise heatsink, the Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 produced a rise above ambient
temperature result of 32.2°C. There are a few
heatsinks in the general vicinity of this temperature result which are
quieter, but for similarly sized heatsinks the Thermaltake Silent Boost
K8 fairs well acoustically speaking. A sub-35°C result on this reference
list is considered good, and so the Silent Boost K8 does generally well in both
thermal performance and noise generation.
This heatsink is based on a very simple copper fin
arrangement, and the results we see here are in large part due to the Panaflo
fan, I suspect. Some improvements could be made to the overall flatness of
the base, a recurring comment with Thermaltake's heatsinks, but
it's nothing a sufficient coating of thermal compound won't be able to
compensate for. Bottom line, the Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 is a good
solid mainstream K8 heatsink.
