with its unprotected fan spinning away at 6800rpm, the cooljag sfo-d(18sc) makes a nice racket. it's natural then to assume that the noise of the fan translates into amazing thermal performance and temperatures that are "low, low, low!" Well... almost but not quite. The SFO-D(18SC) was able to produce a rise above ambient temperature test result of 29.6°C on the FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic test platform, but it is also surrounded by numerous other heatsinks which managed virtually the same result with lower noise levels.

Bearing in mind the Cooljag SFO-D(18SC)'s intended use with AMD Opteron processors, we can perhaps overlook the noise by assuming a rack mounted enclosure is most likely. That's all well and good, but we can't set aside the fact that this heatsink weighs 732grams. At that weight, and perhaps more importantly with that much copper, better thermal results are certainly possible.

Ultimately though, the numbers tell the full story; the Cooljag SFO-D(18SC) is a loud and well performing socket 754/939/940 AMD Opteron heatsink that would be suitable for workstation environments. It's weight is substantial, and FrostyTech would highly recommend the Cooljag SFO-D(18SC) be removed before any computer is transported or shipped. Thermally, it has sufficient surface area to cool a toasty AMD Opteron processor and keep temperatures well in check. Still, we can't help thinking the design relies too much on strong airflow and not enough on good thermodynamics.
