one of the down sides to thermally throttled fans is that if case temperatures remain too low, cpu temperatures can elevate due to the decreased rpm of the fan. the thermal test results for the dynatron a22 heatsink listed above are really only half the picture. the dynatron a22's rise above ambient temperature of 34.5°C is with the fan spinning at about 3000RPM - its the lowest speed. Because of the manner in which FrostyTech tests heatsinks, the ambient air temperature never rose enough to force an increase in the rotational speed of the Delta AFB0712HHB fan (where an ambient air temp of 42°C would have resulted in an impeller speed of 5700RPM). This factor is something we can normally circumvent by shorting out the contacts to the fans' thermistor, but in this case that sensor was too inaccessible. Based on past experience, a rise above ambient temperature in the mid 20's would have been reasonable had the Dynatron A22's fan been spinning at the full 5700RPM. However, as we have not tested this, that potential will have to remain in the realm of speculation. Considering the test results that we were able to compile from the Dynatron A22 operating in its default configuration, the heatsink certainly makes for a nice quiet solution. Temperature levels are leaning towards the warmer side of the scale, but that is most certainly due to the low-noise fan speed. The Dynatron A22 is a good heatsink which fulfills the role of cooling an AMD Athlon64 processor satisfactorily, but it would have been better if the thermal throttling had been left up to the BIOS and AMD's Cool 'n Quiet. What we have here is a lot of wasted potential, unfortunately.
