Types of Cables: There are three types of cables we will be dealing with, the first being Straight Through cable (568A), Straight Through cable (568B) and the Cross-Over cable. Networks should be kept consistent and only 568A or 568B wiring methodology used, and not interchanged. There isn't much of a difference between the two, but choose a preference and stick with it.
First thing is first, cut a length of cable. The only real limitation with Cat 5 is that the length of wire cannot be longer then 100 meters (328 Feet) for 100BASE-TX and code specifies 100 Meters for 10BASE-T aswell, though it can technically go further before signal degredation starts to play in. Whether a long length (which may need to be fed through walls before attaching the plugs) or a short length, the next step as far as we are concerned is to attach the RJ-45 jacks.
