Given the
heat column and aluminum fins we were surprised to find the nPowerTek TTIC-NPH-2 ranked
in so low in the initial test results. There was a bit of air flow leaking
out around the rear of the fan because the fan shroud does not
wrap right up the rear of the fan itself, but it is
hard to say if that alone is the reason why the NPH-2 doesn't look
it will be bringing any real temperature drops to the table.

Results like this just go to show you how
difficult it is to really tell how well a heatsink will perform from appearances
alone. Where the TTIC-NPH-1 performed remarkably well on a large interface die representing the socket
478 platform, the TTIC-NPH-2 falls flat.
Temperatures were with in acceptable ranges, and the Npowertek TTIC-NPH-2 is far from being a poor cooler, but it really doesn't hold
a candle to its older brethren.
Considering the size of
this cooler, the large copper heatpipe and simple design I really expected better thermal performance
than we saw in the tests.
Ultimately, I'd pass
over this heatsink in favor of something with a little more kick.
The heat column is a very innovative design, but with such drastic differences
in performance from the two TTIC heatsinks we have tested, perhaps the
company is using a one-size-fits-all approach for its AMD AthlonXP and Intel Pentium 4
heatsinks. As we have seen many times in the past, this never gives the consumer
the best cooler in both cases.
