Just as
you expect a Ford Expedition to guzzle gas like no tomorrow, you can pretty
much assume that the quieter a heatsink is, the lower its overall thermal
performance will be. The Arctic Cooling SS4Pro is incredibly quiet, and packs in the
thermal performance to match.

There are
many reasons why low noise heatsinks typically make poor coolers, but the most
obvious analogy comes down to material. For a low noise heatsink to be
competitive the manufacture must make an effort to bundle the low noise fan with
a more thermally conductive material, design, or means of fabrication. Extruded
aluminum is a good option, but not
one of the best. Extruded aluminum is thermally efficient, but not so much as copper. See where I'm going with this?
Ultimately, the Arctic
Cooling Super silent 4 Pro does what it has been set out to - it
produces very little noise. Sure this would make it a satisfactory
heatsink to consider for an older model P4 which doesn't produce that much heat
(ie, no gaming machines for this little baby), but it could have had much
more potential. Had the under-hung fan been mounted to a better designed
heatsink, or one made of copper, I'd expect the numbers we see here to have
decreased by at least several degrees. Still in the end, the results aren't too
bad. Not impressive, but not too bad either.
