Okay there are few things to keep in perspective when you look at the above list of reference heatsinks. Yes, the performance of the Verax P14Cu is not going to put it anywhere near the thermal range of performance heatinks, but then again none of those heatsinks are able to maintain the low sound levels. As a zero noise heatsink the Verax P14Cu shows an improvement over its older brother the P14. Let's jump the final rise above ambient temperatures to see where things stand.

The copper base is 3mm thick. Rather than bolting it into place, Verax use CGDS to apply a layer of copper to the aluminum to which the copper base is soldered.

This seemingly inconspicuous silent heatsink retails for $69USD from Veraxfans.com, and with the aid of the Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying technology is able to outperform the all-aluminum Verax P14 heatsink by a little over 10 degrees Celsius. With the lower amounts of air being moved by the nearly silent CAIRdB fan, the designers at Verax have had to seek out innovative ways of improving the overall thermal performance of the remaining heatsink components. The use of CGDS is especially interesting as this is the first heatsink we have tested which makes use of this technology which is itself a little over 20 years old. Hopefully we will see more and more manufacturers adopt this technique and finally put an end to aluminum heatinks with copper bases which have been bolted on.

Thermally, the Verax P14Cu will run hotter than most lower-noise heatsinks, but as there are not very many zero noise heatsinks on the market it is difficult to draw direct comparisons since the noise levels of the other reference heatsinks are largely higher.

Intended for stock systems which are stable at slightly elevated temperatures, the Verax P14Cu would be a good heatsink to use in situations where case venting is first of all adequate, and secondly where computer noise output must be virtually nil. So long as you can accept the fact that the Verax P14cu will keep the AthlonXP processor within operational temperatures , the acoustic benefits are probably well worth it to many of you.

With a heatsink of this nature it might be worth mentioning that other devices such as video card fans, chipset fans, and even powersupply and case fans must either be swapped out for passive cooling, or run silent. Adding the Verax P14Cu to a system full of case fans and other sources of noise will decrease the overall noise level in some respects, but if the other components are not below 40dB then the acoustic benefits won't be fully realized.
