Abstract: Squirrel cage fans have a couple of benefits over standard vaneaxial fans when it comes to lower-noise heatsinks, though they don't tend to deliver nearly as much air.

At the highest fan speed setting the Coolermaster Aero1 comes in at the top of this list of reference heatsinks. With the fan RPM set as low as possible the sound output is dramatically lower, but the temperatures rise in turn. There is a happy equilibrium in their somewhere - but it all comes down to user taste and just what applications are being run on the computer.

We're getting to the point were the performance heatsinks are all ear splittingly loud. Gone are the days of moderately loud heatsinks which cool effectively. With the rise in processor wattage louder, faster fans have been thrown into the equation which in turn create more noise.

Coolermaster have opted to include a fan speed control with the Aero1 which mounts to the front of the 3.5" drive bay cover or hides on one of the specially prepared PCI slot covers. The end result is that the user has direct control over the speed and noise output of the fan.

While we can't show you every possible temperature result, we can illustrate what the lowest and highest fan RPM setting will bring to the table thermally. At a slower RPM, the Coolermaster Aero 1 is very quiet and still manages to offer very good cooling capability. With a turn of the dial the fan speed kicks in, and temperatures drop. It may be loud, but then again most of the other performance coolers are too.
